Two dead babies found

JAKARTA (JP): Two dead newborns were found dumped at separate places here over the weekend.

A trashman found one infant among trash in a garbage container on Jl. Palmeriam in Matraman, East Jakarta, about 7:30 a.m. yesterday.

According to Sa'alim, the 67-year-old trashman, the baby boy was wrapped in black plastic.

The baby was believed to have just been delivered as the placenta was still attached to the body when it was dumped.

A day earlier, a dead baby girl, wrapped in a school uniform, was found under the back seat of a mikrolet, a public minivan, by the owner in Kranji, Bekasi.

The owner, Yusrizal, said that he found the dead infant about 7 a.m. but had no idea who had dumped the baby because he saw nothing suspicious when he garaged the car the previous evening.

The two babies were taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital's morgue for a postmortem examination.

More than 50 abandoned babies have been sent to the hospital this year. The babies were believed to be dumped by their mothers because they were the result of an extramarital relationship. (jun)
