Two cubs born to 'Yanti' at Ragunan

A nine-year-old Sumatran tiger, Yanti, gave birth to two cubs at Ragunan Zoo, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, said zoo spokeswoman Titis Puntorini.

She said the sex of the newborns was not immediately known, "because the mother is very protective and would not let anyone near the cubs".

Although Titis did not mention the number of Sumatran tigers in the zoo, she said that the birth was the fourth successful delivery for Yanti.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), there are less than 500 Sumatran tigers in the wild, and the number is declining due to illegal logging and deforestation.

The Sumatran tiger is classified as an endangered species and is protected by law. -- JP
