Officers from the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat) evacuated two workers on a water channel normalisation project who were trapped under concrete sheet pile material on Jalan D.I. Panjaitan, Cipinang Cempedak, Jatinegara, East Jakarta.

“Two workers were evacuated after being trapped under concrete sheet pile material in the Cipinang Cempedak area,” said East Jakarta Gulkarmat duty officer Parlin Nainggolan in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, on Sunday.

The evacuation process lasted more than three hours. Officers had to work carefully because part of one victim’s body was submerged in murky water and buried under concrete material.

“It was quite difficult because part of the victim’s body was in the water. The water was murky and the victim was also buried under concrete,” Parlin said.

Parlin explained that to facilitate the evacuation process, officers first reduced the water level at the site using pump machines.

After the water receded, officers were able to work more effectively to lift the material that had fallen on the victim.

Officers also deployed heavy equipment to assist in removing concrete material and debris from the surrounding area.

“We deployed 25 East Jakarta Gulkarmat personnel with support from six vehicles in the rescue operation,” Parlin said.

According to Gulkarmat, the incident was reported at around 2:50 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. Officers arrived at the scene at 2:56 p.m. and the evacuation was declared complete at around 5:39 p.m.

Both victims suffered injuries to the head and legs after being struck by the debris.

During the evacuation process, the victims also received medical treatment. Officers administered intravenous fluids and oxygen while awaiting the completion of the rescue operation.

After being successfully evacuated, the two workers were taken to the nearest hospital for further medical treatment.

The evacuation process also affected traffic flow on Jalan D.I. Panjaitan. Several sections of the road were used for vehicles and equipment belonging to officers, causing congestion for vehicles travelling from Cawang towards Jatinegara.
