Two classrooms at Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Badrussalam Nahdlatul Wathan (NW) Sekarbela on Jalan Sultan Kaharudin, Mataram, collapsed on Saturday (20/6/2026) afternoon. The rooms that collapsed were for classes 8 and 9.

“The incident occurred around 4.30 p.m. on Saturday. In the morning, we had distributed report cards and there were no further activities afterwards,” said Istiarah, Head of MTs Badrussalam NW Sekarbela, during an interview at her office on Monday (22/6/2026).

Istiarah confirmed there were no casualties as the school was empty at the time of the collapse. She suspected the building collapsed due to its age. “The building has been standing since 1984 and only underwent repairs once, in 1995. It is old. We had actually anticipated this and had already vacated the room, not allowing it to be used,” she explained.

As a result of the incident, the roof and all contents, including desks and chairs, were severely damaged. MTs Badrussalam NW Sekarbela estimates the material losses to exceed Rp 1 billion. “The entire roof collapsed, and the desks and chairs were also damaged. Our estimate is around more than Rp 1 billion in total losses. We plan to construct a concrete slab later so there will be no worries in the future,” Istiarah stated.

Istiarah expressed hope that the government would follow up on the collapse of the two classrooms, especially with the new school year set to begin in two weeks. According to Istiarah, the Head of the Mataram Education Office (Kadisdik), Yusuf, has already visited the site to inspect the collapsed building. However, there has been no notification yet regarding the renovation timeline. “He said he was ready to help, that was the phrasing,” Istiarah noted.
