Two Cipinang Prison Visitors Arrested for Smuggling Drugs in Cigarettes
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Class IIA Narcotics Penitentiary (Lapas) in Cipinang, Jakarta, arrested two visitors suspected of attempting to smuggle narcotics into the facility on Thursday (16/4/2026). “We secured two visitors. Their method involved bringing personal belongings during the visit, and our officers noticed an intact pack of cigarettes,” stated the Head of the Class IIA Narcotics Penitentiary in Jakarta, Syarpani, in a written statement on Thursday. Syarpani explained that officers inspected the cigarettes carried by the visitors because the arrangement appeared unusual, even though the packaging was still sealed. The officers then reported the incident to Syarpani, the Head of the Class IIA Narcotics Penitentiary in Jakarta. “It was opened jointly, and 24 packets of white powder suspected to be narcotics were found inside 12 cigarette sticks. Subsequently, we handed them over to the East Jakarta Metropolitan Police Resort,” he clarified. Syarpani revealed that attempts to smuggle narcotics into the penitentiary occur frequently using various methods. “We have foiled the ninth attempt up to today. The methods vary; previously in chicken claws, sanitary pads, and today in cigarettes,” he disclosed.
