Two bank robbers shot to death

SEMARANG, Central Java: Two of seven people suspected of robbing a city branch of Bank Panin here on Sunday, were shot to death for resisting police arrest.

Sr. Comr. Halba R. Nugroho, chief of the Semarang Municipal Police, said here on Monday the two, identified as Lasmono from Kendal and Legiyo from Mijen, were shot for trying to escape when the police were apprehending them while the five others were already under arrest.

He said that the police seized cash totaling Rp 27,500,000, a Mitsubishi minibus, two machetes and several knives from the suspects.

The robbers took Rp 50 million from the bank's safe and fled the scene on Sunday after tying up the bank's security guard.

Halba said local police were able to arrest the suspects just ten hours following the robbery after the police examined a pair of sandals left at the bank and some pieces of earth on them at the forensic laboratory in the provincial police headquarters. The results proved that the earth found on the sandals was the same to that in Mijen, Legiyo's home village. -- Antara
