Police have arrested two suspects in the attempted kidnapping of an elderly man, identified as GH (70), in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area of Penjaringan, North Jakarta. The case drew public attention after CCTV footage of the attempted abduction went viral on social media.

Investigations revealed that the incident was allegedly motivated by a personal dispute related to a romantic relationship that did not receive family approval. The Head of Public Relations for the Metro Jaya Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, stated that the motive was uncovered after investigators examined the suspects and gathered evidence.

“From the preliminary investigation, the incident is suspected to have been motivated by a personal or romantic issue that was not approved,” said Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto.

Police identified two suspects, with the initials CW (31) and FAP (26). In addition to detaining the suspects, officers seized several pieces of evidence believed to have been used during the incident, including a white Toyota Fortuner, CCTV footage, mobile phones, a screwdriver, and the clothing worn by the suspects at the time.

The case came to light after CCTV footage circulated showing an elderly man being targeted in an attempted kidnapping in the PIK residential area. In the video, the victim is seen walking along a road when a white Toyota Fortuner follows him from behind. Shortly after, a man exits the vehicle and tries to forcibly pull the victim inside.

The 70-year-old victim resisted, leading to a struggle on the roadside that caused both to fall. Despite attempts to force the victim into the car, the perpetrator failed because the victim continued to fight back. The suspects then fled in their vehicle.

Police conducted an investigation by reviewing CCTV footage and witness statements. Further inquiries led investigators to believe the attempted kidnapping was triggered by a personal matter involving a romantic relationship.

The case remains under police handling, and evidence has been secured to support further investigation. For their actions, the suspects are charged under Article 450 and/or Article 471 of the Criminal Code concerning kidnapping and/or assault, which carry a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison.
