Twitter Renamed Tweet.app: What's the Reason?

Startup Operation Bluebird announced the arrival of its new social media platform under the name Twitter.now last week. However, a court judge ruled that Operation Bluebird is barred from using the Twitter name and must change it.

Elon Musk, as the new owner of Twitter, renamed the social media platform X in 2023. Operation Bluebird attempted to seize the Twitter trademark from X through legal channels, launching the Twitter.now website whilst awaiting the judge’s decision.

As reported by detikInet, the judge of the Delaware District Court ruled that because X Corporation had abandoned the term ‘tweet’ and the blue bird logo, both are now lawfully available for use. As a result, Operation Bluebird renamed its platform to Tweet.app.

However, Judge Colm F Connolly stated that Operation Bluebird cannot yet use the Twitter name, as it could confuse consumers and infringe on trademarks.

According to Connolly, X Corp. still holds the Twitter.com domain name. The social media platform now known as X is still frequently referred to as Twitter by many of its users, which could cause confusion.

Nevertheless, the ruling is not final. In his opinion, Connolly wrote that Operation Bluebird is highly likely to succeed in proving that X Corp. has ceased using the Tweet trademark and the Bird logo, and does not intend to resume using them.

The case will continue to determine whether X Corp. ultimately retains the Twitter trademark, given that Elon Musk’s company now uses the X name extensively.

Meanwhile, the Tweet.app website is already live, but is currently only accepting a waiting list for its social media platform. To date, 172,000 people have signed up and reserved usernames at a cost of USD 20.
