Twin Earthquake Death Toll Skyrockets, Surpassing 4,490
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that shook Venezuela has reportedly soared to 4,490. The latest figures on the deadly natural disaster were announced by the President of Venezuela’s National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, via his official Telegram account on Sunday local time.
Quoting a Reuters report on Monday (13/07/2026), although the death toll continues to rise as data is updated, the officially recorded number of injured people remains unchanged from previous figures, standing at 16,740. Meanwhile, local rescue authorities have so far managed to evacuate and rescue 6,462 people from the rubble of affected buildings.
The humanitarian disaster caused by the twin earthquakes measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, which first struck the country on 24 June, has also triggered a large-scale displacement crisis across affected regions. According to the latest government statistics, the total number of residents who have lost their homes and are now displaced has reached 17,907.
The epicentres of the twin earthquakes, located close to the northern coastal region and densely populated areas, are the main factor behind the massive scale of infrastructure damage in Venezuela. The successive strong tremours that toppled housing complexes and public facilities mean the total casualty count is predicted to continue climbing in the coming weeks.
In response to the widening devastation, domestic rescue teams and humanitarian volunteers are now racing against time to comb through the concrete rubble in the disaster’s red zones. The primary focus of officers in the field is currently on ensuring the provision of basic sanitation and emergency medical supplies for the tens of thousands of refugees, in order to prevent the outbreak of disease.
To ease the burden of this humanitarian crisis, international assistance from neighbouring countries and global donor agencies is reported to have begun arriving at Venezuela’s main airport. The aid delivered includes emergency tents, ready-to-eat food supplies, heavy equipment to support evacuation efforts, and expert medical teams to treat the seriously injured.
The Venezuelan government has committed to accelerating the even distribution of logistics to all displacement points and to beginning an initial assessment for a long-term reconstruction plan. “We will ensure the security situation in affected areas remains conducive throughout the post-disaster emergency response period,” said a law enforcement official in Caracas.
