Twin boys die from burns

JAKARTA (JP): Eighteen-month-old twins rescued Sunday from an inferno on Jl. Kampung Rawa in Central Jakarta, died yesterday at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.

The twins and their father, identified as 45-year-old Ujang, were trapped in the fire, which destroyed at least 120 houses in Johar Baru district.

An employee at the hospital's morgue, Oyon, said that Sjahrul died in the morning and his brother Sjahril died later that night.

"The bodies have been taken by relatives today (Monday) for burial."

Ujang is still being treated at the hospital, Oyon said.

The fire, which started about 6:45 a.m., was believed to have been sparked by an electrical short circuit in Ujang's house.

The damage bill is estimated to be Rp 500 million (US$138,888) and at least 600 people, or 135 families, are now homeless.

Central Jakarta Fire Department deployed 20 fire engines and extinguished the blaze at 9:30 a.m. (jun)
