I wish to relate a tragic story which befell my 73-year-old
mother in Purbalingga, Central Java, last April.

A man named Lasto wearing a TVRI collector uniform came to my
mother's house to collect the regular television contribution
fee. My mother let him in and as she was getting her payment, he
hit her on the back of the neck with a crow bar. He then dragged
her into the bathroom and drowned her in the bak mandi.

An investigation revealed that Lasto had been in trouble for
embezzling TVRI contribution money in Purbalingga district and
that he had planned the murder to get more money.

The sentence meted out by judge Mrs. Sutrisni of the
Purbalangga court was only nine years in jail. Many found the
sentence too light. TVRI's collectors gain access to many houses
and I suggest people be careful.
