TV stations' responsibility
TV stations' responsibility
From Republika
I believe the freedom to air various entertainment programs on
television has led to an increase in the number of criminal
cases. As a mother of three, I would like to appeal to TV
stations to assume a greater responsibility for the next
generation's character building.
Some programs are only meant to scare viewers and display our
primitive natures bereft of religious values, while others
comprise TV dramas with girls mostly exhibiting their physical
charms. Worse still, this entertainment is presented when
students come home from school and children are relaxing at home.
Television as part of the mass media has a very crucial role
in character building. This responsibility should be given proper
attention -- more than the medium's commercial aspect.
As a member of the public and a layman I would like also to
question the duties of such organizations as the Indonesian Ulema
Council, Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah and the Islamic Defenders
Front. What are they doing about this issue and -- aren't they
embarrassed?
