TV film called Lo Fen Koei
TV film called Lo Fen Koei
From Kompas
On Jan. 23, 2001, a Jakarta-based private television station
aired Lo Fen Koei, a TV film on, among other things, the actions
and behavior of a young Indonesian of Chinese descent.
Unfortunately, the film did not feature any favorable side to
this young man which could be held up as a model. He was
portrayed as the embodiment of the devil. He sold opium and
womanized. By hook or by crook, he would get the woman he
desires, even if she were married. It was real pity that this
film was aired on the eve of the Chinese Lunar Year, which
symbolizes the transition to a new and, hopefully, better year.
At this point, one may justly enquire the motive of airing
this film. Was it intended only as a form of entertainment or was
it meant to portray the reality in our society? Wasn't there a
better film than this for that night? Worse still, the film was
rebroadcasted on Feb. 6, 2001. TV films must be censored before
they are aired as otherwise they may be offensive to particular
sectors of society.
