Turning Plastic Bag Waste into Valuable Products

In the hands of those who care, used plastic bags no longer end up in landfill. Through an upcycling workshop, Bandung residents were invited to transform plastic waste into products with both utility and economic value. Participants learned techniques for processing used plastic bags into new raw materials. Various sheets of plastic bags were arranged and processed into a stronger material that can be reused for functional products. The upcycling approach is considered capable of extending the lifespan of plastic waste. This activity is a response to the waste emergency conditions still faced by the city of Bandung. In addition to reducing the volume of waste ending up in disposal sites, upcycling also opens up opportunities for the creation of creative products with economic value. Through this training, the community is encouraged to see waste not merely as rubbish, but as a material that still has potential. The processed plastic bag waste was exhibited as an example of products that can be reused. Besides reducing environmental pollution, this activity also encourages the growth of a circular economy through the reuse of used materials. The workshop was organised by the Warga Masagi Community together with the ITB Product Design Programme and the Rakarsa Foundation.
