Turning Plastic Bag Waste into Valuable Products

In the hands of people who care, used plastic bags no longer end up at the dump. Through an upcycling workshop, Bandung residents were invited to transform plastic waste into products with both practical use and economic value.

The activity was one of the community’s efforts to respond to the waste emergency still facing Bandung, whilst also fostering awareness that rubbish can become a resource when managed creatively.

Participants learned techniques for processing used plastic bags into new raw materials. The workshop was held by the Masagi Community together with ITB’s Product Design Department (DPMK) and the Rakarsa Foundation.

Sheets of plastic bags were arranged and processed into stronger materials that can be reused to make functional products. The upcycling approach is considered capable of extending the useful life of plastic waste.

The initiative is a response to the waste emergency conditions facing Bandung. Beyond reducing the volume of rubbish ending up at disposal sites, upcycling also opens opportunities for creative products with economic value.

Through this training, the public is encouraged to see waste not merely as rubbish, but as material that still holds potential.

The processed plastic bag products were exhibited as examples of items that can be used again. Besides reducing environmental pollution, the activity also supports the growth of a circular economy through the reuse of discarded materials.
