Jakarta (ANTARA) – Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may offer health benefits.

Research findings indicate a link between regular turmeric consumption and lower blood pressure, according to a Health report on Wednesday (28 October). This benefit may be related to curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties.

Functional medicine doctor Elliot Hirshorn said chronic inflammation contributes to the development of hypertension.

Researchers have found that curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties may help regulate blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, which in turn can help lower blood pressure.

Hirshorn also explained that the thickening and hardening of artery walls over time, caused by oxidative stress and inflammation, can lead to increased blood pressure.

“Curcumin has anti-fibrotic properties that may help prevent, or even reverse some of, that fibrosis,” he said.

He added that curcumin may improve the body’s ability to dilate blood vessels, ultimately lowering blood pressure.

“As a powerful antioxidant, curcumin can reduce damage to the innermost lining of blood vessels,” he said.

However, people with mild hypertension, oxidative stress or inflammation are advised to consult a healthcare professional before taking turmeric supplements.

Hirshorn advised people with moderate to severe hypertension and cardiovascular risk to follow standard medical treatment, and to consult a healthcare professional if they wish to add turmeric as a complementary treatment.

He warned that regular turmeric consumption may also carry a risk of drug interactions or health problems, including blood thinning, digestive issues and kidney stones.
