JAKARTA — Türkiye has reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism and international climate cooperation ahead of the 31st UN Climate Change Conference (COP31). The conference will be held in Antalya from 9 to 20 November 2026 and will include a leaders’ meeting.

Türkiye’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ahmet Yildiz, outlined his country’s priorities at a special event organised by the President of the UN General Assembly ahead of COP31. The event was held under the theme “A Planet Fit for the Future: Restoring Trust through Climate Action”.

“At a time of growing geopolitical uncertainty and increasing scepticism about climate issues, Türkiye is taking on the COP31 presidency with a strong commitment to multilateralism and international climate cooperation,” Yildiz said, as quoted by Anadolu on Saturday (17 October 2026).

He said that, as the implementation of the Paris Agreement enters its second decade, the international community needs to focus more on translating climate commitments into concrete steps and measurable results. Türkiye wants to promote the implementation of agreed climate pledges so they bring about tangible change, he said.

“Our ambition is to turn existing climate pledges into real action and concrete results,” he said.

Yildiz said preparations for COP31 in Antalya were being stepped up. Türkiye is committed to conducting the conference presidency transparently, through consultation and participation, and in a predictable manner.

“We will facilitate dialogue and work towards balanced, consensus-based outcomes. Ultimately, COP31’s success will be the result of our collective efforts,” he said.

He also urged countries to ensure their leaders attend the conference. Yildiz said the involvement of national leaders was important to strengthen international cooperation and build momentum for faster climate action.

COP31 will provide a forum for countries to discuss efforts to address climate change, including how to translate international commitments into measurable policies and action.
