Turkey to host Moslem summit
ANKARA (Reuter): Turkey will host leaders from seven Moslem
countries in June for a summit on economic cooperation championed
by Islamist Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, a state minister
said yesterday.
The grouping, known as the Developing-Eight (D-8), met in
Istanbul at the start of the year to consider the potential for
joint projects in industry, finance and trade.
Alongside Turkey, the group brings together Iran, Egypt
Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Malaysia.
Erbakan has given priority to strengthening ties with the
Islamic world since coming to power last June. Soon after the
formation of his coalition he visited all D-8 countries except
Bangladesh.
