Turkey calls Israeli attack on Sumud Flotilla piracy

Ankara — Turkey condemned the interception by Israeli forces in international waters of the Sumud Flotilla humanitarian aid convoy en route to the Gaza Strip, and described the incident as piracy.

‘We condemn the interception by Israeli forces in international waters of the Sumud Humanitarian Aid Convoy, organised to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, which is a new act of piracy,’ said the Foreign Ministry on Monday.

Ankara also said that Israel’s coercive actions and intimidation tactics would not deter international solidarity with the Palestinian people. Turkey urged Israel to immediately halt the interception and release unharmed the convoy participants held without condition.

‘The international community, especially countries whose citizens are aboard the convoy, must ensure the safety of civilians and demand accountability for those responsible under international law,’ said Burhanettin Duran, head of communications at the presidency.

Duran added that Israel is attacking the civil initiative by activists from around 40 countries aimed at breaking the blockade of the Gaza Strip and delivering humanitarian aid.

He described Israel’s actions as ‘barbaric and immoral’, contrary to international law and humanitarian principles.

Turkish authorities will take all necessary steps to repatriate Turkish citizens and others aboard the convoy safely, Duran said.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, departed Barcelona on 15 April.

On the night of 29–30 April, activists reported that Israeli forces intercepted the ships near Crete, damaging engines and navigation systems before departing the area.

On Monday, organisers said the convoy was again surrounded and faced a forced interception attempt by Israeli warships in international waters, about 250 nautical miles off the Gaza coast.
