Tuna Fisheries Issues: Availability of Ice Plants and Fuel for Fishermen

The achievement of certification, improvement of fishery product quality, and sustainability have been identified by Janti Djuari, Founder & CEO of the Indonesian Pole and Line and Handline Fisheries Association (AP2HI), as the primary challenges facing Indonesian tuna products in increasing their competitiveness in the global market.

Currently, efforts are required to provide cooling systems and ice on fishing vessels, which are essential for maintaining fish freshness. AP2HI is also inviting investors to participate in the provision of ice plants equipped with solar power energy sources.

Furthermore, business actors are hoping for government support in providing affordable fuel for fishermen amidst the surge in global energy prices. Concurrently, climate change is impacting sea temperatures, fish movement, fishing windows, and the operational range of fishermen.

Consequently, AP2HI is encouraging the transformation of fishing technology to overcome various oceanographic challenges.
