Tulungagung Regent Collects Rp 2.7 Billion After Extorting Regional Agencies
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Tulungagung Regent Gatut Sunu Wibowo has collected Rp 2.7 billion by extorting regional government agencies (OPD). Gatut targeted collecting up to Rp 5 billion. “From the total request by Gatut Sunu to the OPDs, at a minimum of Rp 5 billion, the realisation of the money received by Gatut is approximately Rp 2.7 billion,” said Deputy for Enforcement and Execution of the KPK, Asep Guntur Rahayu, during a press conference at the KPK’s Red and White Building on Saturday (11/4/2026). The Rp 2.7 billion was collected over the period from December 2025 to March 2026, or from the inauguration of the OPDs until Gatut was arrested by the KPK in a hand-catching operation (OTT) conducted on Friday (10/4/2026). Each handed over money in varying amounts, ranging from Rp 15 million to Rp 2 billion. The money was used to finance Gatut’s personal needs, including purchasing luxury shoes. “The money is suspected to have been used for personal interests, such as buying branded shoes, of course, then paying for medical treatment, hosting meals, and other personal needs that were also requested or charged to the OPD budgets,” said Asep. The KPK has named Tulungagung Regent Gatut Sunu Wibowo and his aide Dwi Yoga Ambal as suspects in the alleged extortion and unlawful receipt of other benefits case. “The KPK has named two suspects, namely Gatut Sunu Wibowo as Regent of Tulungagung for the 2025-2030 period and Dwi Yoga Ambal as the regent’s aide,” said Deputy for Enforcement and Execution of the KPK, Asep Guntur Rahayu, during a press conference at the KPK’s Red and White Building on Saturday (11/4/2026). The officials were reportedly asked to sign statements of readiness to resign from their positions and as civil servants without including dates. The letter is suspected to have then been used as a tool of pressure against the OPD heads in fulfilling the regent’s demands, including when asked for money contributions. In practice, Gatut is also suspected of requesting a sum of money from 16 OPDs for various reasons. Before collecting money from the OPDs, Gatut is said to have first increased their budgets.
