The Tulungagung rock music lovers’ community (Tulungagung Rock Community/TRC) is holding the Tulungagung Distorsi 2026 Festival, featuring 21 rock and punk bands with the legendary group Power Metal as the main guest star. The festival, which will also showcase national bands such as Marjinal and Red Spider alongside dozens of local bands from various regions, will enliven the independent music stage at GOR Lembu Peteng, Tulungagung, on Saturday (28/6).

Tulungagung Distorsi organiser Andi Mahifal stated that the festival was conceived as a space for expression for the rock and metal music community while encouraging the growth of an independent music ecosystem in Tulungagung. "So far, there hasn’t been an event that truly accommodates rock and metal music in Tulungagung. That’s why we want to present a festival that can become a space for musicians and the community," he said on Friday.

According to Andi, Tulungagung Distorsi is designed to become an annual agenda involving various music communities from across East Java, thereby strengthening the network among musicians and rock communities in the region. The committee is providing around 2,000 tickets priced at IDR 65,000 for the early bird category, IDR 100,000 for the second presale phase, and on-the-spot sales on the day of the event.

Meanwhile, Power Metal guitarist Ipung said his group has prepared around 10 songs to be performed at the festival. Power Metal’s performance will be reinforced by two vocalists, Arul and Bais, who are scheduled to appear together in a featuring format. "We hope to deliver our best performance while supporting the development of rock and metal music events in the regions," said Ipung.

This festival is part of an effort to revive the spirit of rock music, which has a long history in Indonesia. Its development began in the early 1970s, when rock transformed from merely a Western music trend that entered in the 1950s into a national music identity. The journey of Indonesian rock music is also inseparable from social and political dynamics. From the prohibition era during the Old Order to becoming a symbol of resistance and freedom of expression, rock has continued to evolve.

During the transition from the Old Order to the New Order, cultural openness gave birth to a number of pioneering groups that blended Western rock character with local cultural elements. From this period, the strong foundation of Indonesian rock music was born through legendary names such as God Bless, The Rollies, AKA, and Duo Kribo. Entering the 1990s, rock music reached its golden age. Rock bands dominated the national music stage with a hard, energetic musical character and lyrics that often addressed social unrest and the realities of daily life. Names like Slank, Boomerang, and Jamrud became icons of that generation. From the 2000s to the present, rock music has continued to develop into various subgenres. The presence of independent bands has further enriched the colour of Indonesian rock music while maintaining its existence amidst changing trends in the music industry.
