Tugboat Capsizes, Crushed Between Cargo Ship at Batam Shipyard, 3 Dead

A tugboat capsized and was crushed between a cargo ship in the waters of the Batam Shipyard Industrial Area, PT ASL Tanjung Uncang, Batam City, Riau Islands (Kepri) on Friday afternoon (6/3). There were five people on the tugboat, of whom three were found dead, one survived, and one was missing. The three deceased were evacuated to Mutiara Aini Batam Hospital. ‘Yes, there was an accident at PT ASL’s shipyard, three dead, one safe and one missing,’ said Basarnas Tanjungpinang chief Fazzli when contacted by CNN Indonesia. The five crew members were: 1. M. Habib Ansyari: ABK (Survivor) 2. Abdul Rahman: Captain (Dead) 3. Guntur Pardede: Chip (Dead) 4. Yusuf Tankin: Second Engineer (Missing) 5. Jhonson Bertuahman Damanik: KKM (Dead) Search for Yusuf Tankin, the Second Engineer, is ongoing by the Joint SAR Team. The search is taking place while waiting for the sea to rise so rescuers can pull the tugboat that is still wedged beneath the cargo ship. Fazzli said that before the incident they were towing the cargo ship Kyparissia, which was to dock in the industrial area of the shipyard. However, during towing, the tugboat became wedged with its position beneath the hull as the tide fell. ‘The tugboat was wedged under the side of the ship; the sea was running low,’ Fazzli said.
