Tuesday, BMKG forecasts that most major cities will experience light rain
Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of potential light, moderate to heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in several large Indonesian cities on Tuesday.
Cited from BMKG’s official website in Jakarta, on Tuesday, BMKG forecaster Bintari A explained that, in general, a convergence zone extending along the western Indian Ocean affecting Aceh, North Sumatra, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, the Halmahera Sea, and the northern Pacific Ocean around North Maluku.
Therefore, the agency forecasts that several major cities could experience moderate to very heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds, particularly in the Manado and Nabire regions.
Meanwhile, other large cities are expected to experience light to moderate rain, namely Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Tanjung Pinang, Pangkal Pinang, Jakarta, Serang, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Kendari, Mamuju, Palu, Gorontalo, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Jayapura, Jayawijaya, and Merauke.
The major cities forecast to only experience cloudy conditions today are Jambi, Bengkulu, Semarang, and Pontianak.
Earlier on Monday (19 May), BMKG said that high waves could potentially occur in several waters of North Sumatra from 19 to 22 May 2026, which should be monitored as they could disrupt shipping.
BMKG forecaster at Belawan Maritime Meteorology Station Class II, Dasmian Sulviani, in Medan, said the high waves, reaching 1.25 to 2.5 metres, could occur in the Western waters of the Batu Islands, Western waters of the Nias Islands, and the western Indian Ocean off Nias.
He noted there is a cyclonic circulation in the western Indian Ocean near the Nias Islands that could support wind growth in North Sumatra’s waters, generally blowing from the southwest to the northwest with speeds of 6-22 knots.
