Tual Customs Attends Launch of Indonesia–China Fisheries Cooperation
Tual Customs attended the launch of the implementation of Capture Fisheries Cooperation between the Republic of Indonesia and the People’s Republic of China through the TCG Scheme in Tual City on Thursday (24/09). This event marks a significant momentum in strengthening capture fisheries cooperation and developing fisheries potential in the Maluku region.
The event was attended by the Indonesian Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Governor of Maluku, the Director General of Capture Fisheries, and the Ambassador of the PRC to Indonesia. The series of activities included a safety briefing, inspections of the fish processing industry, the unloading of catches from modelling vessels, visits to MSME stands, and the inspection of TCG vessels imported directly from China to Indonesia.
The Head of the Tual Customs Office, Wahyu Lafermam, stated that the implementation of this cooperation is a vital milestone after a decade of waiting. “After waiting for approximately 10 years, a clear arrangement has finally been realised for fishing vessels to operate within Indonesian waters, with the obligation for all production to be landed at ports in Maluku and further processed to provide added value,” said Wahyu.
Indonesia is promoting a measured fishing scheme based on quotas as well as the adoption of aquaculture technology. This step is crucial given that national aquaculture production remains around 5.5 million tonnes per year, significantly trailing behind China, which has reached over 80 million tonnes per year. This maritime policy also places ecological sustainability as a foundation through the protection of marine conservation areas, the management of plastic and microplastic waste, and the modernisation of flagship commodities such as seaweed cultivation.
The government is also strengthening the supervision of marine assets and law enforcement, including through Presidential Regulations on maritime security to prevent illegal fishing and the smuggling of high-value commodities such as lobster seeds (benur).
The launch ceremony was marked by the pressing of a siren button and the ceremonial departure of TCG vessels by the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Ambassador of the PRC, the Governor of Maluku, and relevant officials. Tual Customs also supports the implementation of this cooperation through the execution of customs duties, the supervision of goods traffic, and synergy with related agencies.
Tual Customs is prepared to strengthen synergy in the implementation of this cooperation within its authority. With clear regulations and enhanced supervision, this cooperation is expected to drive fisheries processing in Maluku, increase production value, and support the welfare of fishermen and regional economic growth.
