TTU Parliament Launches Ethics Probe into Three Members over Doctor Intimidation Case

The Chairman of the North Timor Tengah (TTU) Regional Council, Kristoforus Efi, has emphasised that the legislative body will not protect its three members allegedly involved in the case of intimidation against the late Dr Icha Pakenoni. The Regional Council’s Ethics Committee (BK) has now commenced an intensive examination process.

Kristoforus stated that the Ethics Committee is moving swiftly to follow up on recommendations from the Council leadership presented on Monday (29/6). Starting Thursday (2/7), the committee is scheduled to hold meetings and begin interrogations of the complainant, the accused, and relevant witnesses.

“Since the Council leadership recommended the handling of this case to the Ethics Committee, the BK has moved immediately. Starting tomorrow, examinations will be conducted on the complainant, the accused, and witnesses before the BK reaches a conclusion and decision,” said Kristoforus on Wednesday (1/7).

He explained that the primary focus of the Ethics Committee is to assess whether any violations of the code of ethics were committed by the council members. However, if criminal elements are discovered during the process, the committee will hand the matter over to the relevant authorities.

“The focus of the Ethics Committee is on ethical violations. Meanwhile, matters relating to criminal acts will be recommended for handling by law enforcement, in this case, the National Police,” he asserted.

The investigation is expected to be completed in a short period. Kristoforus aims for the committee to present its findings to the Council leadership by next week, which will then be brought to a plenary session for announcement and formal determination according to the applicable mechanisms.

Furthermore, Kristoforus requested that the Ethics Committee work transparently, accountably, and professionally. This is deemed essential to ensure that the decision made provides a sense of justice, both for Dr Icha’s family and the wider community.

“The Regional Council will not protect the three members suspected of involvement in this matter. We trust that the Ethics Committee will carry out its duties professionally. Whatever decision is ultimately reached, we will respect and communicate it openly to the deceased’s family and the public,” he concluded.
