Tsunami Threat Ends, BMKG Urges Vigilance Against Aftershocks in NTT
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has stated that the tsunami potential resulting from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), has ended. The agency confirmed that no significant tsunami heights were recorded following the tremor.
Deputy for Geophysics at BMKG, Nelly Florida, conveyed this information during a press conference on Saturday morning. With the tsunami threat declared over, residents in coastal areas may resume their normal activities. Fishing activities can also return to normal as the tsunami potential has concluded.
Nevertheless, Nelly urged residents on the mainland to remain alert for potential aftershocks. The BMKG’s advisory has now shifted its focus to vigilance against subsequent tremors. “The public should remain alert for aftershocks that may still occur,” she stated during the press conference.
The main earthquake, measuring magnitude 7.7, occurred on Saturday at 04:58 Western Indonesian Time (WIB), with its epicentre approximately 30 kilometres northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, NTT, at a depth of 15 kilometres. BMKG emphasised that the tsunami potential has ended, rather than being revoked, and urged the public to follow official BMKG information and remain vigilant against aftershocks.
