Former TNI Commander General (Ret.) Moeldoko has fondly remembered Indonesia’s sixth Vice President Try Sutrisno as an inspirational figure.

Moeldoko recalled meeting Sutrisno when he was a young officer serving as a company commander. During one of Sutrisno’s visits to his battalion, the then-TNI Commander inspired the soldiers with exceptional motivational leadership.

“What I saw in him was how he, as a Commander, became an agitator for our soldiers. He truly had the ability to inspire and ignite remarkable spirit. He inspired us to become true patriot soldiers,” Moeldoko said.

This principle became Moeldoko’s guiding philosophy during his tenure as TNI Commander from 2013 to 2015. He adopted the motto “Together with the People, TNI is Strong,” reflecting Sutrisno’s belief that the military’s strength derives from its connection to the people.

“Only through this can TNI be strong. If TNI abandons the people, TNI will be weak,” Moeldoko explained.

Wiranto, the President’s Special Adviser for Politics and Security, similarly praised Sutrisno’s legacy during a condolence visit to his family home. He highlighted Sutrisno’s humility, constitutional obedience, and unwavering commitment to justice and his principles.

“As Vice President at that time, he always prioritised the people’s interests over personal and factional interests,” Wiranto noted. “This is an attitude we must emulate and set as an example, both for soldiers and for those currently holding state positions.”

Try Sutrisno passed away at the Armed Forces Central Hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Soebroto in Jakarta on Monday, 2 March 2026, at approximately 06:58 WIB. After prayers at Sunda Kelapa Mosque, his remains were laid to rest at Heroes’ Cemetery (TMP) Kalibata the same afternoon.
