JAKARTA — Indonesia’s sixth Vice President Try Sutrisno has died at Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital in Jakarta on Monday, 2 March 2026. The news was confirmed by former chief of the hospital, Major General TNI (Retired) Albertus Budi Sulistya.

According to reports, his body will be washed at the hospital’s mortuary and transported to a funeral home located on Purwakarta Street No. 6, Menteng, Central Jakarta, for the lying-in-state.

Try Sutrisno served as Vice President from 1993 to 1998, accompanying President Suharto. He was born on 15 November 1935 in Surabaya, East Java, and was one of Indonesia’s Vice Presidents who came from the military.

Sutrisno first knew Suharto during the Liberation of West Irian operation in 1962. In 1974, he was selected to serve as President Suharto’s aide-de-camp. In August 1985, Sutrisno was promoted to Lieutenant General of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) and appointed as Deputy Head of the Army General Staff whilst serving under Army Chief of Staff General Rudhini.

The People’s Consultative Assembly of the 1992–1997 period selected Try Sutrisno as Vice President to accompany Suharto during its general session in 1993. His tenure as Vice President ended in 1998, when he was succeeded by BJ. Habibie following the MPR general session.
