Try Sutrisno Dies; Puan States Indonesia Has Lost a Humble Figure
Jakarta – DPR Speaker Puan Maharani stated that Indonesia has lost a warm and humble figure following the death of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President Try Sutrisno.
“On behalf of myself and the DPR RI, I express my deepest condolences for the passing of Try Sutrisno,” Puan said in a statement on Monday, 2 March 2026.
“Indonesia has lost one of the nation’s humble figures,” she said.
Puan remembered Try Sutrisno as a role model figure who was close to all generations. According to Puan, their last meeting occurred during the annual session of the MPR/DPR in 2025, where she personally welcomed Sutrisno’s arrival at the Parliamentary Complex.
“The last time I met the late Mr Sutrisno was during the annual session at the DPR last year. I welcomed him. And as always, he was warm and humble,” she said.
The PDI-P politician also assessed that Try Sutrisno’s contributions to the nation and state were substantial, making his passing a loss for all Indonesian people.
Puan prayed that the deceased would be accepted by Allah SWT and that his surviving family would be given strength.
“May his deeds and worship ease the deceased’s path to heaven. And may his surviving family be given strength,” she said.
It was previously reported that Try Sutrisno passed away at the age of 90 at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto hospital in Jakarta on Monday at 06:58 WIB.
His son, Taufik Dwi Cahyono, stated that his father had no specific medical history, but his health declined due to advanced age.
“My father, well, he was already at an advanced age, so everything was declining. At that age, there was nothing particularly serious, because of his age, his respiratory capacity declined and so forth,” Taufik said at RSPAD.
He explained that before his death, Try Sutrisno had been receiving treatment since 16 February 2026 after experiencing loss of appetite.
“(He was hospitalised since) 16 February. So it was just a sudden loss of appetite, he was brought here, ups and downs, given medication and food,” he said.
According to Taufik, the medical team at RSPAD together with the presidential team had provided maximum medical care during his hospitalisation until Try Sutrisno passed away on Monday morning.
