East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa has expressed profound condolences over the death of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, retired General Try Sutrisno. Khofifah described the late leader as a true soldier and statesman who dedicated his entire life to the sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

The statement was delivered by Khofifah in Surabaya on Monday, 2 March. She emphasised that with Try Sutrisno’s passing, the Indonesian nation has lost one of its finest sons, with a lengthy track record in the history of national leadership, both in the military and government.

According to Khofifah, Try Sutrisno was not merely a formal leader, but rather a figure who served as an exemplar of discipline and decisiveness. During his tenure as Commander of the Armed Forces and Vice President from 1993-1998, he was known for his unwavering commitment to national stability.

“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. The Indonesian nation has lost one of its finest sons. He was a true soldier and statesman who dedicated his entire life to safeguarding the sovereignty and integrity of the NKRI,” said Khofifah.

As a form of state honour, Governor Khofifah instructed the people of East Java to fly the Red and White flag at half-mast for two consecutive days.

This action is in accordance with Law Number 24 of 2009 concerning the Flag, Language, and State Symbols and National Anthem. Article 12, Paragraph 2 stipulates that the flag is flown at half-mast as a sign of national mourning upon the death of a former President or Vice President.

The flying of the flag at half-mast in East Java will continue for two full days as a final tribute to the late Try Sutrisno.

Khofifah hopes that the values of nationalism and the spirit of unity consistently upheld by Try Sutrisno can become a valuable legacy for the younger generation.

“We remember him not only as a leader, but as a figure who consistently preserved the spirit of nationalism and unity,” she said.

Khofifah concluded her statement with prayers for the late leader’s peaceful passing, that his deeds of worship be accepted, and that his surviving family be granted strength and sincerity in facing this sorrow.
