Paula White-Cain, a televangelist serving as Donald Trump’s spiritual adviser during both of his presidential terms, ignited criticism after comparing the US president’s life to that of Jesus Christ. This statement came amid condemnations from the Vatican’s Catholic Church regarding Trump’s lust for war.

White-Cain made the comparison during an Easter lunch at the White House. In her speech on Wednesday, she drew parallels between the legal proceedings and assassination attempts faced by Trump and the trials endured by Christ.

“Jesus taught so many lessons through His death, burial, and resurrection. He showed us great leadership; great transformation requires great sacrifice,” said White-Cain, with the president standing behind her.

“And Mr President, no one has paid the price like you have paid the price. It almost cost you your life. You were betrayed, arrested, and falsely accused. This is a common pattern shown by our God and Saviour,” she said.

“God always has a plan: On the third day, He rose, He defeated evil, He conquered death, hell, and the grave. And because He rose, we all know that we can rise. And sir, because of His resurrection, you rise,” she added.

“And I believe that God said to you: because of His victory, you will win in everything you do,” she concluded, met with applause. The president responded with a smile and a “thank you”.

However, the comparison was branded as “madness” on social media. Catholic theologian Rich Raho wrote on X: “Blasphemy. It’s astonishing to see a US bishop standing on stage while Paula White compares Trump to Jesus Christ.”

White-Cain was first officially appointed to the White House in 2019 as a faith adviser under the Office of Public Liaison, but reports indicate she has been in contact with Donald Trump since 2002, after he called her upon seeing her on TV.

She has been a key part of the Trump administration’s efforts to maintain evangelical Christian support and was also selected to speak at the 2017 presidential inauguration.
