US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. They discussed steps to end the war in Ukraine.

The White House said the American envoys discussed a “substantial plan” regarding next steps to end the Ukraine war, AFP reported on Sunday (6/9/2026). After leaving Russia, the pair will travel to Kyiv on Sunday.

The visit by Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law to Moscow is aimed at reviving negotiations to end the worst conflict in Europe since the Second World War.

“Witkoff and Kushner met with Putin on Saturday to advance President Trump’s peace agenda in the Russia-Ukraine war,” a White House official said in a statement to AFP.

“Both sides discussed a substantial plan for next steps, which will be announced in the coming weeks, and look forward to an equally productive meeting tomorrow in Ukraine,” the official added.

Meanwhile, Russian adviser Yuri Ushakov described the talks as “very frank”. He added that the American side “put forward a number of ideas regarding possible paths towards a settlement”, though he did not provide further details.

The Russian side told the Americans that Moscow is “confident” it can achieve its military objective of controlling the remaining territory of eastern Ukraine, Ushakov added.

Meanwhile, both Russia and Ukraine have pledged not to attack each other’s capitals for three days to allow negotiations to take place.
