The confusion within the administration began with an announcement by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, which was deemed premature regarding a deal that was not yet final. The White House had previously requested that the announcement be postponed. This situation reportedly angered Trump and sparked internal disputes. Initial discussions regarding the nuclear deal are known to have been ongoing since April 2025, coinciding with Wright’s first overseas visit to Saudi Arabia. Trump explicitly stated that nuclear cooperation between the US and Saudi Arabia is heavily dependent on Riyadh’s willingness to normalise relations through the Abraham Accords. The deal announced by the US Department of Energy on Wednesday (22/7/2026) was actually designed to provide broader access for American companies to the nuclear energy programme in Saudi Arabia. The Abraham Accords are a series of agreements normalising diplomatic, economic, and security relations between Israel and several Arab nations. The accords were mediated by the United States in 2020 during Trump’s first term. To date, Saudi Arabia’s participation in the pact remains a crucial point in the Middle East diplomacy championed by the Trump administration, even though this condition adds complexity to the ongoing technical nuclear negotiations.
