Trump's Popularity in the US Plummets, Dropping 33% Due to Iran War

Public satisfaction with US President Donald Trump has reached the lowest point of his political career. This is evident from the Reuters/Ipsos poll concluded on Monday, as reported on Tuesday (1/9/2026).

Trump’s low popularity coincides with widespread dissatisfaction regarding the war in Iran and the economic management by the Republican Party. Only 33% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance in the White House.

“Trump’s political image appears increasingly likely to become a burden for the Republican Party, which must maintain its slim advantage in Congress in the mid-term elections on 3 November,” the report stated.

“Democratic supporters (the opposition party) appear more enthusiastic heading into this election, with 4ng 46% of those identifying as Democrats stating they are very enthusiastic to vote in November, compared to 31% of Republicans,” Reuters added.

When asked which party they would choose if Congressional elections were held today, 36% of independent voters in the survey chose Democrats, while 22% chose Republicans.

In fact, since mid-August, Trump’s popularity has remained at a level previously only briefly reached at the start of his first term, and far below the 47% approval rating seen at the beginning of his current term. This satisfaction level is lower than the lowest point experienced by his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, which was 35% in October 2024.

Like Biden, Trump also continues to face widespread public dissatisfaction due to high inflation rates. Petrol prices have surged since Trump ordered the US to begin bombing Iran in February, and only 36% of Americans support the war.

The US-Iran conflict had actually experienced a relatively long hiatus, but in recent days, both sides have launched missile attacks against each other. It is noted that since the start of the war, Iran has largely blocked major transit routes for global oil trade.

More specifically, approximately 71% of Americans (including four out of ten Republicans) disapprove of how Trump is handling the cost-of-living crisis. Over the past month, survey respondents stated that the Democratic Party has better economic ideas compared to the Republican Party.

“This is the first time the Democratic Party has led on this issue in approximately a decade,” Reuters noted.

“The four-day poll has a margin of error of 3 percentage points,” it added.
