Trump's Policies Backfire, America Risks Decisive Defeat by China

China is winning the race in artificial intelligence development, a consequence of decisions made by the Donald Trump administration regarding the output models of the US company Anthropic.

The launch of Anthropic’s Mythos model was delayed due to export control directives. While the US government eventually permitted the launch of the Mythos 5 model, the Fable 5 remains unreleased.

However, this delay has benefited China, as local companies have had time to fill the resulting gap. One such model, GLM 5.2, is reported to have performance levels equivalent to renowned US laboratories and is claimed to match the capabilities of Mythos.

“Many AI experts are saying that GLM-5.2 is the first Chinese AI model capable of competing with and defeating public AI models from major American laboratories without compromise,” said venture capital investor Marc Andreessen, as quoted by CNBC International on Wednesday.

“The timing is critical given current events,” he added.

Sam Bresnick, a researcher at the Georgetown Center for Security and New Technology, stated that these developments serve as a significant warning.

According to industry sources cited by Jefferies strategist Christopher Wood, GLM 2.5 is nearly on par with Anthropic as a competitor in the corporate market, but at only a quarter of the cost per token.

Former Trump advisor on crypto and AI, David Sacks, expressed similar sentiments, noting that China’s capabilities have also matched Anthropic in terms of cybersecurity. He further added that the US has deviated from President Donald Trump’s strategy to win the AI race.

“A year ago, President Trump stated that America is in a global AI race and the way to win is through pro-innovation, pro-infrastructure, pro-energy, and pro-export policies. President Trump was absolutely right, but we have deviated from that strategy,” he explained.
