Trump's Plane Swap Planned in a Day, Three Agencies Report Iran Threat
A complex deception tactic was revealed during US President Donald Trump’s return journey from Ankara, Turkey, last month. Trump was reportedly moved secretly from the presidential aircraft Air Force One to another plane using an airport catering truck to avoid the threat of a missile attack from Iran. The elaborate ruse took place within a day after US and Turkish intelligence detected Iran’s plan to fire a missile at the presidential jet.
Based on reports gathered from law enforcement officials and intelligence sources, the emergency decision was made while the annual NATO conference was underway in Ankara in July 2026. The move was triggered by credible information obtained by the National Security Agency (NSA), the CIA, and Turkey’s National Intelligence Organisation (MIT) regarding Iran’s plan to fire a surface-to-air missile at the presidential aircraft.
Trump initially arrived in the Turkish capital aboard a new retrofitted Boeing 747 donated by the Qatari government. However, the old white-and-blue jet that had served the presidency since the 1990s was also placed on standby on the ground as a support aircraft.
Shortly before departure on 8 July 2026, Trump posted a message on Truth Social stating that he would use the old Air Force One model for nostalgia’s sake. Press footage showed Trump climbing the stairs of the old aircraft. However, minutes later, an airport catering truck was seen moving away from that plane and heading towards a different US Air Force C-32A jet.
Inside the catering truck, Trump was accompanied by a number of his trusted aides, including Natalie Harp, Walt Nauta, and Dan Scavino. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also joined the secret flight to a military base in the UK.
While Trump flew on the C-32A jet, the aircraft publicly identified as Air Force One continued to fly its original route. The decoy plane carried Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, as well as a number of White House staff and the press corps.
Sources said Rubio and Bessent were aware that the president was not on board. However, the journalists and most staff did not know. After arriving in the UK, Trump transferred back to the Qatari-donated Boeing 747 to continue his journey to Washington, D.C.
The threat emerged amid US-Iran war tensions approaching their sixth month. Trump himself acknowledged the great risk he faced, even describing himself as the number one target on Iran’s kill list.
When asked about the use of the diversion tactic, Trump stated that the military and the Secret Service had asked him to change flights. Regarding the risk faced by staff and journalists on the decoy plane, Trump gave a surprising answer.
“I think, actually, the plane I was on was at greater risk,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday (11/8). He insisted he was neither surprised nor worried, noting that every influential president inevitably faces many threats.
