Trump's Latest Post Claims Mexico to Greenland
US President Donald Trump has once again engaged in provocative actions. Trump uploaded an image of a map displaying the US flag covering large parts of North America, including Canada, and extending to cover territories in Mexico, Greenland, and Iceland.
The post has drawn international scrutiny, with the image being interpreted as a manifestation of Trump’s ambition to seize territories beyond US borders. As reported by The Hill and Anadolu Agency on Tuesday (8/9/2026), Trump’s post features a map with an American flag motif enveloping the US, Canada, Mexico, and parts of Central America, as well as Greenland, Iceland, and Caribbean islands such as Cuba and Jamaica.
Trump uploaded the map via his Truth Social account on Monday (7/9) local time. He posted only the image, without any accompanying statement or explanation.
However, the post follows a recent trend of Trump proposing to rename various areas and locations. Recently, Trump promoted a proposal to change the name of the US state New Mexico to “New America”. Trump posted an image showing the word “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America”.
Previously, Trump also pushed to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America”, a move that met with fierce opposition from the Mexican government. Furthermore, Trump recently signed an executive order to rename “Lake Ontario”, located on the US-Canada border, to “Lake America”. This occurred while Washington and Ottawa are engaged in a fierce trade war.
Additionally, Trump has previously attempted to claim Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. In the map uploaded on Monday (7/9), Trump made no official announcement regarding US territorial claims over Mexico.
Strong Condemnation from Mexican President
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, in her response, asserted that Mexico will not become a “colony or protectorate” of any other nation.
“In this month celebrating our homeland, we reaffirm that Mexico is not and will not become a colony or protectorate of any foreign nation. Proudly, we are a free, independent, and sovereign nation,” she stated firmly via a post on X.
This strong reaction comes as tensions escalate between Mexico and the US regarding security, trade, and migration issues. Sheinbaum has repeatedly emphasised the importance of national sovereignty when responding to the statements or actions of the Trump administration, while maintaining her government’s intention to preserve cooperative relations with Washington.
This is not the first time Trump has taken such actions. He previously posted a map of the Strait of Hormuz as a new US territory. This occurred when US-Iran negotiations failed to reach a resolution in mid-August 2026. At that time, Trump stated that US military policy in Iran would remain unchanged, noting that the US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian ports would continue to apply.
Trump subsequently uploaded a map on Truth Social depicting the Strait of Hormuz as a “new US territory,” while emphasising his threat to claim sovereignty over the vital waterway.
