Trump Withdraws US Troops from Iraq by End of September

President Donald Trump will withdraw American military forces from Iraq. The US military is reportedly set to leave the country by the end of September. “We feel we no longer need the military there,” Trump said during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in Washington, as reported by Al Jazeera on Wednesday (15/7/2026). Al-Zaidi stated that “US forces will leave Iraq” on 30 September, “while American companies will remain in Iraq”. The US military has been in Iraq for 23 years since the invasion began in 2003. At that time, the US led a coalition to overthrow former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. The Pentagon stated it reaffirmed a 2024 agreement with Iraq to end the military mission against ISIL. Approximately 2,500 US troops were still serving in Iraq when the agreement was reached.
