Trump warns Pope Leo about Iran's nuclear weapons threat

Washington (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump stated that he had warned Pope Leo XIV about Iran’s nuclear weapons, which could pose a threat to Catholics around the world.

“This is one of the most important wars. I told the Pope; you can’t let them (Iran) have nuclear weapons because they will use them and millions of people will die, including Italians and Catholics around the world,” Trump told The New York Post on Monday (20/4).

Trump claimed that by weakening Iran’s military power and uranium enrichment, he is actually serving the goal of long-term peace, according to The New York Post, which reported that the US President continues to voice his disappointment over criticism from the Pope.

Previously, Trump criticised Pope Leo XIV for criticising US and Israeli actions against Iran.

At another time, Trump said he has no problem with the Pope and claimed his right to disagree with the Supreme Leader of the Catholic Church.

Pope Leo has consistently criticised the US war in Iran. In particular, the first American-born Pope called US threats against the Iranian people unacceptable.

In early April, shortly after US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth called for prayers for military personnel, the Pope stated in his sermon that the desire to dominate is not in line with the way of Jesus Christ.
