US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of “consequences if no deal is reached.” The warning came ahead of talks between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran in Geneva on Tuesday (17 February).

“I will be involved in the talks, indirectly,” Trump told reporters whilst travelling to Washington, as reported by AFP on Tuesday (17 February 2026).

“I don’t think they want the consequences of not reaching a deal,” he added.

The latest round of talks was scheduled for Tuesday and mediated by Oman, following Trump’s repeated threats of military action against Tehran — first regarding Iran’s brutal crackdown on anti-government protests and more recently concerning the country’s nuclear programme.

The US and several European nations are concerned about Iran’s programme being directed towards building a bomb, although Tehran has denied this.

The US had also previously pushed for a number of topics to be discussed, including Iran’s ballistic missiles and its support for armed groups in the Middle East. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday morning that “the US position on Iran’s nuclear issue has moved in a more realistic direction.”

Previous negotiation efforts had failed when Israel launched an attack on Iran that triggered a 12-day war, followed by the US bombing Iranian nuclear sites.
