Washington – President Donald Trump has stated that the United States no longer requires assistance from NATO member nations to secure the Strait of Hormuz amid the conflict with Iran.

“The United States has been informed by most of our ‘allies’ in NATO that they do not wish to be involved in our military operations against the Iranian regime,” Trump said on Truth Social on Tuesday, 17 March.

“Because of the military successes we have achieved, we no longer need or want assistance from NATO countries — we never really needed it,” he added.

Previously, Trump had requested China, France, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and other nations to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz to secure one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes for global oil trade.

Trump expressed doubt that NATO allies would be willing to defend the US, contrasting this with America’s commitment to the defence alliance.

Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz nearly halted following US and Israeli attacks on Iran on 28 February, which resulted in civilian casualties.

Iran subsequently retaliated by attacking Israel and US military targets throughout the Middle East.

Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, stated last week that Iran does not intend to close the Strait of Hormuz but maintains the right to ensure security in the shipping lane.
