Washington (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Washington is moving swiftly to end the war with Iran amidst rising tensions in the Middle East region.

“We will end that war very quickly. They are very eager to make a deal; they are tired of this situation,” Trump said at the White House.

He added that he is optimistic the conflict will end soon and that Iran will not possess nuclear weapons.

“I think everything will be finished very quickly, and they will not have nuclear weapons, and hopefully we can resolve it in a good way,” he remarked.

Trump also highlighted US military strength, claiming that recent operations have significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities.

“Our military is the greatest in the world. We have destroyed their navy. Their air force is gone. Their air defence is gone. All of their war equipment is gone,” he said.

Trump reaffirmed that Iran will not be permitted to develop nuclear weapons under any circumstances.

“We will not tolerate that, and we will not let it happen,” he stated.

Tensions in the region have escalated since the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran last February. Tehran subsequently retaliated with strikes against Israel and US allies in the Gulf region, accompanied by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire came into effect on 8 April through Pakistani mediation, but negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce a permanent agreement. Trump has since extended the ceasefire indefinitely.
