Trump: US-Iran peace deal to be signed on Sunday

United States President Donald Trump said on Saturday that a peace deal with Iran is scheduled to be signed on Sunday local time and the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened immediately thereafter. “The deal is scheduled to be signed tomorrow, and as soon as it is signed, the Strait of Hormuz will be open to all,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. Trump also claimed that Iran now “no longer wants nuclear weapons” and signalled that the US would work with Iran to remove enriched uranium at “the appropriate time.” He added that signing the deal would make US relations with Iran “different and better,” but warned that the US has the worst alternative unless the process goes “quickly, easily, and smoothly.” Also on Saturday, Pakistani Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar said an electronic signing ceremony for the US-Iran agreement was scheduled for Sunday. Ishaq Dar’s statement came after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said earlier on Saturday that the US and Iran had agreed on a peace deal framework and were expected to sign it soon. Pakistan has mediated the US-Iran peace negotiations. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei reportedly denied that a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US to end the conflict would be signed on Sunday, citing reasons he described as “doubts from the other party.” Baghaei also stressed that any potential MoU between Iran and the US “would only serve as a framework for continuing talks” and should not be considered a “final deal.” He also added that negotiations on the nuclear issue were expected to continue for 60 days, according to several Iranian state media reports.
