Beijing (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump claimed that his discussion with President Xi Jinping resulted in both the US and China agreeing that they do not want Iran to possess nuclear weapons.

“We also discussed Iran. Our views on Iran are very similar, we want it to end. We don’t want them to have nuclear weapons,” Trump said in a video broadcast by China’s state television, in Zhongnanhai, Beijing, Friday.

Trump made the statement during a private tour with Xi Jinping to Zhongnanhai, China’s highest-level government and leadership complex, which combines the presidential office, the prime minister’s office, and the offices and residences of the Chinese Communist Party’s elite, and is closed to the public and has very high security.

“We want the strait (of Hormuz) to remain open. Currently, we are closing it. They are closing it, and we are closing it again against them. However, we want the strait to be open, and we want them to end this issue, because the situation there is chaotic, quite chaotic,” Trump added.

And that condition, Trump said, is not good and cannot be allowed to continue.

“They must not have nuclear weapons,” Trump emphasized.

In addition, Trump said that he and Xi Jinping also discussed many other things.

“And I think we are very much in agreement. We will continue the discussion further now with a larger group,” Trump added.

He also expressed his gratitude to President Xi and all of his representatives.

“We have established a friendly relationship with all of them. They are great people, it is an honor to be here,” Trump said.

Trump also said that his visit would be reciprocal.

“We will show everything (in America) openly, and hopefully you will have a very good impression, just as I have been very impressed with China. I just want to end by saying thank you very much. These have really been two amazing days. Thank you very much,” Trump said.

In a written statement on the website of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Xi said that China and the US can strengthen cooperation to promote the development and revitalization of each country.

“The two countries need to properly implement the important consensus that we have reached, cherish the current positive momentum that is not easy to come by, maintain the correct direction, eliminate various disturbances, and promote the stable development of bilateral relations,” President Xi said.

Xi Jinping stated that President Trump’s visit this time was a historic and symbolic visit.

In addition, the two presidents agreed to strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional issues.

“This visit is beneficial for enhancing mutual understanding, deepening mutual trust, and improving the welfare of the people of both countries. It once again shows that China and the US can coexist peacefully, achieve mutually beneficial cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, and find the right way to interact. That is what the people of both countries and the world expect,” President Xi said.

Also present during the visit were Secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Cai Qi, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, US Ambassador to China David Perdue, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio, Finance Minister Scott Bessent, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
