US President Donald Trump is pushing for peace in the Russia-Ukraine war after agreeing to end hostilities with Iran. He made the remarks after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G7 summit in France. According to Al Jazeera on Wednesday (17/6/2026), Trump said he would do whatever he could to end the Russia-Ukraine war following a ‘very good’ meeting in France. Trump urged Russia to make a peace deal with Ukraine. ‘I will do whatever I can,’ Trump told reporters at the summit in Evian-les-Bains near the Swiss border on Tuesday (16/6/2026). He added that too many young people are dying on the battlefield on both sides. ‘Look, Russia has to make a deal,’ he said. Trump claimed he has repeatedly been a pioneer of peace in wars. Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, he considers its resolution not difficult. ‘I have solved eight wars. This is a war that I think will be the easiest to solve,’ he said. Zelenskyy joined the talks on Tuesday morning with the G7, which consists of the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the European Union. He also spoke with Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the summit. ‘The main focus was strengthening air defence for Ukraine and advancing diplomacy to make Russia end its war,’ Zelenskyy wrote on X after the meeting. ‘Peace is needed,’ he said. Zelenskyy stated he had received important commitments from the G7. ‘More air defence missiles along with licences to produce them, a winter support package, and increasing pressure on Russia. Importantly, the US is ready to provide support in all these efforts,’ he wrote. ‘It is crucial that everything discussed is implemented. Russia must learn that its war will never be normalised. I thank everyone who helps,’ he added. Meanwhile, European diplomats described the atmosphere of the meeting as constructive. ‘The situation has turned for Ukraine. The situation in 2026 is very different from 2025. Ukraine is bravely holding the front lines,’ European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X. ‘Russia’s exhaustion is visible. Now is the time to redouble our support,’ she concluded.
