Trump: United States Will Never Allow Iran to Possess Nuclear Weapons
Washington - US President Donald Trump affirmed that American government policy over several decades has been to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, whilst stating he had not yet heard a firm commitment from Iran on this matter.
“For several decades, the policy of the United States has been never to allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons,” Trump said in a State of the Union address before Congress on Wednesday, 25 February.
He stated that he preferred a resolution through diplomacy, but had not heard a statement from Iran that the country would never possess nuclear weapons.
“They want to make a deal, but we have not heard the words: ‘We will never have nuclear weapons’,” he said.
Trump affirmed that he would not allow Iran, which he described as “the world’s primary sponsor of terror,” to possess nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi stated on Tuesday that his country was prepared to take the necessary steps to reach an agreement with the US on the nuclear issue.
“We are ready to reach an agreement as soon as possible and do whatever is necessary to achieve it,” he said in an interview with NPR.
