Trump Unhappy with Australia over Iran, PM Albanese Responds Thus
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the United States did not make any “new requests” for assistance regarding Iran. He conveyed this on Friday (17/4) after US President Donald Trump said he was “not happy with Australia”.
Australia, a security ally of the US, stated that it is not involved in the Iran conflict but has an interest in reopening the Strait of Hormuz for fuel shipments.
Trump has repeatedly criticised Australia for not helping in the Iran war.
“I am not happy with Australia because they were not there when we asked them to be there,” Trump told reporters in Washington on Thursday (16/4) local time.
“They were not there, related to Hormuz,” Trump snapped, as reported by AFP news agency on Friday (17/4/2026).
Albanese told reporters that Trump had clarified that he “had dealt with it” regarding Iran.
“There are no new requests at all,” he said.
Australia is also negotiating with France, the United Kingdom, and the US regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Defence Minister Richard Marles said on Friday (16/4).
Last month, Canberra was requested by Washington to assist in the defence of Gulf countries. Canberra responded to the request by sending E7 Wedgetail surveillance aircraft and missiles to protect the United Arab Emirates, Australian officials said.
