Trump to Discuss AI with Xi Jinping at September Summit
Tokyo (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump said he will discuss artificial intelligence (AI) with Chinese President Xi Jinping at their face-to-face meeting in Washington this coming September.
“I’ve always said that America’s goal must be to dominate the future, and that includes being the number one superpower in artificial intelligence,” Trump said at an event in Washington announcing an initiative to protect Americans from rising electricity bills caused by the rapid growth of AI data centres.
“We’re leading China. We want to keep that position,” Trump said. “President Xi is coming on 24 September, and we’ve talked about it when I was in Beijing, and we’ll discuss it again.”
On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt signalled that allegations of Chinese theft of AI technology from American companies are likely to be one of the main items on the summit’s agenda.
“There’s always a range of topics that are discussed. I would imagine this will be something that’s very important to the president and this administration,” Leavitt said at a press conference when asked about the allegations.
Their statements came a day after the United States accused Chinese AI start-up Moonshot AI of stealing technology from Anthropic’s most advanced model, Claude Fable 5.
White House Chief Technology Adviser Michael Kratsios said the US government has information showing that Moonshot AI used Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 model to train its latest AI model, Kimi K3, through a technique known as distillation.
The allegations emerged amid easing tensions between Washington and Beijing, as the two countries prepare for a summit at the White House.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Manila this week to prepare for Xi’s visit.
In mid-May, Trump visited Beijing and agreed with Xi to stabilise relations between the two countries, despite lingering differences.
During that visit, Trump also invited Xi Jinping to visit the White House on 24 September.
