Trump threatens to destroy Iran's energy infrastructure if talks fail
US President Donald Trump stated that negotiations with Iran to end the joint US-Israel attacks are making progress, but he still warned that the country’s vital energy infrastructure would be destroyed if talks do not yield results soon. “If for any reason an agreement is not reached soon, although it is very likely to be reached, and if the Strait of Hormuz is not opened immediately for business; then we will end our silence in Iran by blowing up and completely destroying all their power plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalination plants!),” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday. Despite issuing the warning, he said that serious discussions are underway with Iran’s new and more reasonable regime. Trump also told Bloomberg that Iran wants to conclude the matter and described the war as going exceptionally well. Countries in the region have sought to act as mediators to reach an agreement between the two parties, with Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stating that Islamabad is willing to host talks. On Sunday (29/3), Trump pushed diplomatic efforts, with intermediaries including Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt involved in indirect contacts between Washington and Tehran. The indirect talks conducted through Pakistan’s envoy, Trump added, show progress. “An agreement could be reached quite quickly,” Trump said. Many high-ranking Iranian officials have been killed, including among the 1,340 people who died in the US and Israeli airstrikes against Iran on 28 February, one of whom was the Supreme Leader at the time, Ali Khamenei. Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. Those counterattacks have caused casualties and infrastructure damage, while also disrupting global markets and aviation.
