US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that retaliation will come soon, after Tehran attacked water treatment facilities and power plants in Kuwait, as well as an oil refinery in Israel. The Middle East region has heated up since the US and Israel launched large-scale attacks on Iran on 28 February. A total of at least 1,340 people were killed as a result of the series of US-Israeli attacks in various regions of Iran, including the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated with waves of missile and drone attacks on targets in Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. Recently, Tehran escalated its attacks on infrastructure by pounding water treatment facilities and power plants in Kuwaiti territory, and striking the oil refinery in Haifa, Israel, until it burned with a barrage of missiles. When asked in an interview with the New York Post about his response to Tehran’s attacks, as reported by Al Arabiya on Tuesday (31/3/2026), Trump replied: “You will see it soon.” That statement came after Trump had previously issued threats via the social media platform Truth Social that the US would “blow up and completely destroy” all power plants, oil wells, and oil export terminals on Kharg Island, as well as Iran’s water desalination plants, if negotiations mediated by Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt fail. As Trump deploys more military forces to the Middle East that could cause devastating damage to Iran, he is also urging the remnants of the Tehran regime to reach an agreement before it is too late and threatening to strike at the most painful point: Iran’s energy infrastructure. In the interview with the New York Post, Trump said it would soon be clear whether Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, is willing to dialogue with the US. “We will find out. I will tell you in about a week,” Trump said exclusively to the New York Post on Monday (30/3) local time. Ghalibaf issued a statement containing a warning to the US, emphasising that attacking Iran’s infrastructure would be a “big mistake.” “The enemy promotes their desires as news while threatening our nation at the same time. Big mistake. If they attack one, they will get several counterattacks. Insha’Allah, the Iranian people, under the leadership of the Supreme Leader, will make the enemy regret their aggression and reclaim their rights,” he stressed. Trump’s decision to give Ghalibaf a week is believed to be related to the 6 April deadline set for Iran to reach a peace agreement with the US. Iranian leaders have not publicly confirmed their participation in negotiations with the US.
